Lionel & Joanne

    This photograph was taken by Kenneth Johnson, a close childhood friend of Lionel's, at Chatham Square School of Music on Clinton Street on the lower east side. The Chatham Square Music School was located 3 blocks from the Ziprin's family house and his Grandfather's Yeshiva (Sages of Old Israel) on East Broadway. Lionel and Kenneth were co-editors of the literary magazine of Seward Park High School. Kenneth took many photos of Lionel, Joanna and Lionel's family during the 1940s and early 50s. Kenneth still has the original negatives of these photos including one of the entire Ziprin family taken at the explicit request of Rabbi Margoles. Kenneth went on to have a successful career as a professional photo-journalist.

    Kenneth is saddenned by the loss of his one time closest friend with whom he shared stories of youthful love, impassioned writings, antisemitic beatings and so much more. Kenneth would be interested in sharing tales and photographs of those early years of Lionel's life and Rabbi Margoles with any interested member of his family.
